Course details
This course helps learners understand the issues surrounding learning disabilities including the relationship between learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with the purpose of helping learners reflect on and improve how they care for people with learning disabilities.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Discuss learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
- Describe difficulties people may face.
- Describe some of the ways staff can support people who have learning disabilities.
- Describe what can go wrong in care.
- Reflect on attitudes and including people in their own care.
- Discuss adjustments of care.
- Explain benefits of early detection of learning disabilities.
- Explain the legislation and policies including the concepts of capacity and consent.
- Discuss reporting structures
This course meets standard 9 of the Care Certificate Standard when combined with Dementia Awareness and Mental Health Awareness:
Standard 9: Awareness of mental health, dementia and learning disability (partially met):
Learners will:
- 9.1 Understand the needs and experiences of people with mental health conditions, dementia or learning disabilities
- 9.2 Understand the importance of promoting positive health and wellbeing for an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
- 9.3 Understand the adjustments which may be necessary in care delivery relating to an individual who may have a mental health condition, dementia or learning disability
- 9.4 Understand the importance of earl detection of mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
- 9.5 Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to mental health conditions, dementia and learning disabilities
