The Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) is a framework created by Skills for Health and sets out minimum learning outcomes, frequency of refresher training and links to relevant legislation or expert guidance.
It can be used by any healthcare employer in the UK including NHS, independent and voluntary providers.

Course details
This session provides an introduction to Patient Moving and Handling. Patient Moving and Handling is a very practical subject. This course supports the practical training you need. It does not replace it. The practical training will be specific to your needs, area of work, and the demands of your job.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Understand the law and legislation associated with patient moving and handling
- Understand patient handling needs and movement patterns
- Understand principles of patient risk assessment
- Apply principles of good practice when using equipment for patient handling
- Undertake the right process every time a patient is physically assisting to move or transfer
This course meets the core outcomes for Core Skills Training Framework subject 7, Moving and Handing, Level 1 & 2.
Subject 7: Moving and Handling, Level 1
The learner will understand:
- moving and handling risk factors
- employers and employees’ responsibilities under relevant national Health & Safety legislation
- the principles of safer moving & handling
- the principles of using an ergonomic approach for moving and handling activities to support musculoskeletal health
- the factors to consider when undertaking a dynamic risk assessment prior to carrying out a moving and handling activity
- suitable risk control strategies and resources to facilitate good practice following a risk assessment appropriate to the activity and individual’s role.
Subject 7: Moving and Handling, Level 2
The learner will be able to:
- demonstrate safe, dignified approaches for moving and handling activities that promote patient independence and functional mobility
- demonstrate an awareness of normal human movement patterns when moving and handling people
- demonstrate an understanding of person-centred risk assessment to determine safer patient handling techniques, using the multidisciplinary team where appropriate
