Course details
This course provides an awareness of mental health problems and the support that can be offered. You will gain essential knowledge about mental health, including its definition, various types of mental health problems, potential causes and how to recognise their signs and symptoms.
In addition, it will cover legal frameworks, individual impact, self-care and support services for those with severe mental health problems.
By the end of module 1 learners will be able to:
- Explain what is meant by the terms "mental health" and "mental well-being".
- Identify some types of mental health problems.
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of a mental health problem.
- Determine the causes of mental health problems.
- Develop practical self-care techniques that an individual can use.
- Describe your role in supporting an individual with mental health problems.
- Explain how legislation and policies are designed to promote and protect individuals’ human rights.
- Identify how mental health problems affect individual’s feelings and behaviours.
- Outline some treatments for mental health problems.
- Outline the support services available for individuals whose mental health problems are severe or long-lasting.
This course meets standard 9 of the Care Certificate Standard when combined with Dementia Awareness and Learning Disability Awareness. Standard 9: Awareness of mental health and dementia (partially met): Learners will:
- 9.1 Understand the needs and experiences of people with mental health conditions or dementia
- 9.2 Understand the importance of promoting positive health and wellbeing for an individual who may have a mental health condition or dementia
- 9.3 Understand the adjustments which may be necessary in care delivery relating to an individual who may have a mental health condition or dementia
- 9.4 Understand the importance of early detection of mental health conditions or dementia
- 9.5 Understand legal frameworks, policy and guidelines relating to mental health conditions or dementia
